Paper Packaging’s Timeless Appeal: Bringing Back the Charm of Classic Pharmacy Design
In an age where sleek, digital-forward brands dominate, there’s something undeniably nostalgic and reassuring about the charm of classic pharmacy design. Among its most enduring elements is the humble paper pharmacy bag. Often overlooked, these bags symbolize more than just a container for medication—they represent a deeper connection to customer care, environmental consciousness, and the roots of community pharmacy. In today’s evolving pharmaceutical landscape, paper packaging is making a quiet but powerful comeback—and pharmacists are embracing it with open arms.

What is Parcel Coat™
Pharmacies, virtual care providers and telehealth / digital health companies, increasingly ship medications directly to patients for convenience and accessibility. With this trend has emerged growing concerns from pharmacies, patients, and regulators around shipment safety and temperature stability.
To address these concerns, Parcel Health has pioneered a proprietary coating and layering mechanism — Parcel Coat — to provide water-resistance, sustainability, and short-term insulation to our packaging solutions.
In this blog post, we will discuss the importance of packaging materials efficacy—meaning how well can packaging materials maintain the integrity of medications—and the follow-on issues of both plastic and paper packaging.

Leveraging Science for Better Telehealth Packaging
The rapid evolution of telehealth has transformed the healthcare landscape, making medical consultations more accessible and convenient. However, this shift also brings challenges, particularly in ensuring the integrity of medications delivered directly to patients. Prescription packaging plays a pivotal role in preserving medication efficacy, safety, and compliance in the telehealth era.

The Elegance of Sustainability
How Eco-friendly Packaging Elevates Patient Experience: In today’s healthcare landscape, sustainability is no longer an afterthought—it’s a necessity. The packaging of pharmaceutical products plays a critical role in the patient experience, ensuring both safety and convenience while addressing the pressing need for environmentally responsible solutions. One of the most promising innovations in this space is the shift toward paper-based prescription pill bottles, a solution that merges functionality with sustainability.
As healthcare organizations and pharmaceutical companies embrace eco-friendly alternatives, paper-based packaging stands out as an elegant, patient-centric solution. Not only does it reduce environmental impact, but it also enhances the patient experience by promoting safety, ease of use, and brand trust. Let’s explore how this simple yet profound innovation is reshaping the pharmaceutical industry.

Thought Leadership: Innovation by Design — the World’s First and Only Paper Prescription Pill Bottle for Better People and Planet Wellness
Every year, billions of plastic pill bottles end up in landfills and oceans, creating a toxic waste problem that devastates ecosystems. Advertising agency, Publicis Health, reported in 2021 that in the United States alone, the use of plastic prescription bottles contributes over 703,125 tons of non-recyclable waste annually. That number has only gone up since then.
In fact, according to a study published in the International Journal of Pharmacy Practice, each year over two billion prescription bottles are discarded in the United States alone. That study also reflects an estimated 90% of those bottles, typically made from non-recyclable plastics, end up in landfills, further contributing to air, water, and soil pollution.
Recognizing the urgent need for a sustainable alternative, Parcel Health introduced Tully Tube™ the first and only paper prescription pill bottle designed to address this challenge.

Redefining Industrial Design Standards in Pharmaceutical Packaging
For decades, the pharmaceutical industry has defaulted to amber-orange prescription vials, prioritizing mass production and minimal costs over user experience and environmental impact. These clinical-looking containers, while meeting basic safety requirements, fail to address broader industrial design considerations such as user interaction, environmental sustainability, and aesthetic appeal. As reported by UNEP, “We will not recycle our way out of the plastic pollution crisis: we need a systemic transformation to achieve the transition to a circular economy.”
We stand with UNEP and believe industrial design priorities need to adjust to prioritize new materials throughout the pharmaceutical industry to create circular economies at scale.
