At Parcel Health, we have a simple objective: to make sustainable packaging for prescription medication. Most plastic pill bottles cannot be recycled. So, even when you place the containers in a recycling bin, they usually end up in a landfill.

In May, Michigan Medicine launched the Phill Box® at its pharmacy in the University of Michigan Hospital. Before shipping the containers off to Ann Arbor, we dressed them up with a healthy dose of school pride.

Young shoppers want solutions. Sustainability is a big selling point for Millennial and Gen Z consumers.

Plastic pill vials are generally made from a material called polypropylene, also known as “#5 plastic.” Many local curbside pickup programs do not accept #5 plastics due to inadequate waste management infrastructure.

Canada gets it. Starting December of 2022, its national government banned the manufacture and import of single-use plastics such as grocery bags, takeout containers, and some straws. In early 2023, the Phill Box® made its debut into Canada.
